Only as a consequence of original sin is virginity to be preferred to matrimony (S.T. II-II, q. 152, a. 4 [Whether virginity is more excellent than marriage?]; and definition of the Council of Trent, sess. 24, can. 10 against Calvin and Luther).
Yet St. Thomas doesn't discuss in that article the pre-lapsarian state.
