Description
cf. "St. Thomas affirming the Immaculate Conception!"
Fr. P. Mandonnet, O.P., wrote the preface.
Del Prado, O.P., summarizes it (p. 238, DjVu p. 308):
2. Virginem esse conceptam in peccato originali nihil aliud significat nisi quod B. Virgo non fuit sanctificata in parentibus, nec in sua conceptione active sumpta, nec in sua carne ante animationem, nec in sua anima ante unionem ad carnem.
2. The Virgin being conceived in original sin only means that the B. Virgin was not sanctified by her parents, nor in her active conception, nor in her flesh before animation, nor in her soul before its union with the body.
pp. 271-5, DjVu pp. 341-5, in his overview of Ineffabilis Deus , gives several examples where St. Thomas shows she was "sublimiori modo redempta ".
pp. 245-6, DjVu pp. 315-6 quotes Pope Benedict XIV explaining the conceptio passiva vs. activa distinction.
Christ nullo modo needed sanctification, but the B.V.M. needed it aliquo modo , "intuitu meritorum Christi Iesu Salvatoris humani generis " (Ineffabilis Deus).
