Description
cited in Fr. Royo Marín's Theology of Christian Perfection, p. 681fn81 (PDF p. 361) of the Spanish regarding Fr. Báñez interrupting a retreat conference due to St. Teresa's ecstasy
cf. the last chapter of St. Teresa's Autobiography on the eventual flourishing of the Dominican Order, quoted in Martín, O.P., p. 62fn2 (PDF pp. 82-5) « En los tiempos advenideros, florecerá esta Orden [de Santo Domingo], habrá muchos mártires »…; p. 63fn (PDF p. 83):
La Santa no señaló aqui las Ordenes, según ella misma dice, pero el Jesuíta P. Ribera, confesor que fué de Santa Teresa, afirma expresamente que en este pasaje se refiere á la Orden de Santo Domingo.
St. Dominic appeared to her in the cave of Segovia.
Fr. Martín, O.P., also gives an a posteriori or ab eventu argument for how the Dominicans have had an increase in martyrs since the 16th cen. (p. 64f.fn, DjVu pp. 84f.):
- Bl. Alfonso Navarrete (✝1617) + 109 Dominicans in Japan: beatified by Bl. Pius IX
- Bl. Sanz in China (✝1747-8) + his 4 companions: beatified 1893 by Leo XIII
- Bl. Ignatius Delgado (✝1838) + his 25 companions in Tonkin: beatified 1900 by Leo XIII
- Bl. Hermosilla (✝1861) + his 7 companions in Tonkin: beatified 1906 by St. Pius X
- Bl. Francis de Capillas (✝1640): beatified 1909 by St. Pius X
More recently: Sr. Susanna and companions (✝1914), martyred by Turks in Armenia
