The saintly exorcist and Lallemant, S.J., student Fr. Jean-Joseph Surin, S.J. voluntarily ransomed the demons of the Loudun Ursuline convent in exchange for himself being oppressed for two decades; the last years of his life were peaceful, and his physician testified it was a miracle.

This work was placed on the Index for apparently having an affinity with the non-discursive prayer of the Quietists, but it is orthodox, according to Fr. Royo Marín, O.P., PDF pp. 396-8 of Los grandes maestros de la vida espiritual: Historia de la espiritualidad cristiana .
