Palladius was a devoted disciple and biographer of St. John Chrysostom.

The term [φιλοπάρθενος] is used of [the monk] Elias, who was, appropriately enough, castrated [οὐ κατὰ ἀλήθειαν ἁλλά κατὰ φαντασίαν, "not according to truth but according to appearance"] by angels so as to equip him for his profession: Palladius, Lausiac History 29[ref:39.1, PDF pp. 169-72].1 and 2.

Palladius appears to be one of the first to use the term φιλοπάρθενος:

…σφόδρα [adv.: "very much, exceedingly"] γέγονε ["was"] φιλοπάρθενος [adj.: "loving virgins"] (ebbe molto a cuore le vergini)

Wortley translates it: "became quite devoted to spinsters"!
