Latin was used for all subjects (including recess time!) as late as the end of the 18th century in France. Physics was first taught in French in 1783; cf. Lucien Gagne, C.Ss.R.'s preface to Victor Coulombe's transl. of Fr. William Most's Latin by the Natural Method.

Fr. Lucien mentions ENS's admission exam: "A la fin du XIXe siècle, l’examen d’admission à l’Ecole normale supérieure comprenait encore une composition latine." I wonder if Duhem's exists! Fr. Lucien also mentions Jules Ferry…

Duhem's command of Latin and Greek was quite impressive. I didn't realize how extraordinary Duhem was!

The ENS entrance exam was Mon.-Wed. for 6 hours a day, and 4 hours of Latin on Thurs.!

471 applied, 58 made it to the second round (two more days of exams), and of these 58, Duhem ranked first!
