• p. 113: "'It is good for a man not to touch a woman.' These words are indeed true in every case", contrary to Protestant exegetes who think St. Paul is only reiterating the Corinthians' question to him.
• MacRory argues from this verse for continence even in marriage: "It is good for a man to abstain from lawful carnal intercourse with a woman, i.e. , it is good for a man not to touch his wife. Everywhere else in the chapter γυνή means wife."
• Allo, O.P., DjVu p. 266: "ἅπτεσθαι peut signifier « toucher », « s'attacher », « entreren contact », « avoir des rapports intimes »; ici il s'agit de tout rapport que ne permet une continence totale pas".
• MacRory also restricts the extension of ἅπτεσθαι here: "'To touch' (ἅπτεσθαι) refers, as we have indicated, to carnal intercourse, as often in profane writers and in Scripture (See e.g. Gen. xx. 4, 6 ; xxvi. 11 ; Prov. vi. 29)." ∴, St. Paul doesn't say never to associate with women (e.g., MGTOW), but that not having carnal intercourse with them is better.

• v. 28, p. 132: "'tribulation of (or 'in’) the flesh' does not refer to the pains of childbirth, but to the anxieties and troubles of life, which are greater in the married state, inasmuch as the married person has to think not only of self but of the partner and children."
• 1 Cor. 9:5, PDF pp. 150-2 on "mulierem soroem " ≠ a wife: "Have we not power to bring about a Christian woman to minister to us from her means?"

Allo, O.P.'s 2nd ed. of 1 Cor. was 1934 (1st ed. of 2 Cor. in 1937), and Cdl. MacRory cites it on PDF p. 26. Cornely's "work is probably the most exhaustive exposition of the Epistle that has ever appeared."

Cardinal, Scripture scholar; b. Ballygawley, Tyrone County, Ireland, March 19, 1861; d. Armagh, Ireland, October 13, 1945. After his education at Armagh and Maynooth, he was ordained in 1885. He was the first president of Dungannon Academy (1886–87), professor of moral theology and Sacred Scripture at Olton Seminary, England (1887–89), professor of Oriental languages at Maynooth (1889–1905), professor of NT exegesis at Maynooth (1905–15), and vice president of that college (1912–15). He was appointed bishop of Down and Connor in 1915, consecrated archbishop of Armagh in 1928, and raised to the cardinalate in 1929. One of the founders of the Irish Theological Quarterly (1906—), he served for a time as its coeditor. Besides his many articles for periodicals, he published commentaries on St. John's Gospel (1897) and the Epistles to the Corinthians (1915).
