Niedermeyer was the founder of the École de Musique Religieuse, and D'Ortigue was from the liturgical commission of the diocese of Paris.
The intro (PDF pp. 19ff.) contains (as do other chant accompaniment books) probably the best overview of chant's modes, which the author attributes to St. Ambrose.
