Sermons of St. Bernard on Advent and Christmas: Including the Famous Treatise on the Incarnation Called "Missus Est"

Description

Super Sent. , lib. 4 d. 33 q. 3 a. 3 arg. 6 (which is a longer exposition than the parallel ST II-II, q. 152, a. 5):

Bernard, in his homily on the Gospel of the Annunciation, says that the humility of Mary was more pleasing (to God, that is) than her virginity.* Therefore, virginity is not the greatest of virtues.

See Bernard, Homilies on the “Missus est” (also known as Sermons in Praise of the Virgin Mother), hom. 1, par. Leclercq and Rochais, 4:17).

†p. 28 (DjVu p. 40): "Beautiful commingling of virginity with humility! That soul is in no small degree pleasing to God, in Whom humility commends virginity, and virginity adorns humility."

cf. Fr. Albert, O.P.'s partial transl. of hom. 4
