Analysis of a two-level asynchronous algorithm for PDEs (partial differential equations)

A two-level asynchronous algorithm for partial differential equations is presented in this reprint. An analysis of the algorithm and of its implementation on a hypercube shows that the algorithm has several desirable properties; its speedup increases as the number of grid points grows, it is stable with respect to load-imbalance effects, and it is well suited for parallel machines with relatively slow communication.
Domain oriented analysis of PDE (partial differential equations) splitting algorithms

The authors consider the performance of Schwarz splitting algorithms for partial differential equation problems on the hypothetical Multi-FLEX machine. The particular multi-FLEX considered consists of eight clusters of FLEX-32 multiprocessors. The concept of execution domains is introduced to model the three levels of memory on these machines: local, locally shared, and global. This work describes the convergence analysis of a Smolyak-type sparse grid stochastic collocation method for the approximation of statistical quantities related to the solution of partial differential equations with random coefficients and forcing terms (input data of the model). To compute solution statistics, the sparse grid stochastic collocation method uses approximate solutions, produced here by finite elements, corresponding to a deterministic set of points in the random input space. Discrete methods for the solution of the partial differential equations arising in hydrocodes and wavecodes are presented in a tutorial fashion. By discrete methods is meant, for example, the methods of finite differences, finite elements, discretized characteristics, etc. The concepts of stability, consistency, convergence, order of accuracy, true accuracy, etc., and their relevance to the hydrocodes and wavecodes are discussed.
