Critics have said: “magisterial,” “well-researched, serious, and honest,” “reveals unsuspected facets. A very complete work,” “...the fruit of several years of considerable labor. The book is rich in documentation, often unpublished, and in many theological observations.” Marcel Lefebvre’s life is truly remarkable–from start to finish. All Catholics owe a huge debt of gratitude to this man. We ought to know him better. In January of 1990, Abp. Lefebvre came to the motherhouse of the SSPX Sisters in France to work on writing Spiritual Journey. A few days after his arrival, his heart began to give him trouble and serious symptoms once again put the perspective of death before his eyes. All the Sisters of the community thus came to be around their founder–a true father–as he recounted with joyful and moving simplicity the amazing story of his life. Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre H.E. Franziskus Stratmann warned that the “modern movement against war” threatened to become the “reckless revolutionizing of the masses against lawful authority, and the unchecked rule of individualism,” as we saw very clearly with the anti-Vietnam war movement. He insisted, therefore, “that the protest against the boundless arbitrariness and barbarity of modern war should find an echo where the greatest spiritual and moral power is still enthroned: on the rock of Peter.” He asserted in the strongest terms “that the protest against the exaggerated power of the State and military ruthlessness, and the right, in certain cases, to deny obedience to the State, can be confirmed by appealing to Tradition, Holy Writ, and to the noblest authorities of the Church teaching and the Church taught.” Stratmann’s wisdom is brought to the fore in Neo-CONNED!–an all-star lineup of theologians, journalists, academics, politicians, military & intelligence men and commentators who bring to bear the wisdom of Catholic tradition and the prudence of authentic patriotism on the tragic and immoral war against Iraq. These men resist the aggressive, self-proclaimed “Christian” Presidency of a Skull & Bones Freemason. “The[se] essays...ranging from the best minds of the liberal left to the great wisdom of the orthodox right, take on the war in Iraq, closely examining the ideas and motives of its planners, promoters, and defenders. From the criminality of the onslaught itself, may as many minds as possible be further opened to the wickedness of the global plan behind it: the agents of the Antichrist are instrumentalizing the United States of America!” Bishop Richard Williamson The 31 essays and interviews in NeoCONNED! succeed in righting that wrong, setting forth in clear and persuasive terms the Catholic and genuinely patriotic objection to war in Iraq, based upon both the venerable just war tradition of the Church and solid political analysis of some of Americas most noted true conservatives. 447 pp, hardcover, color dust jacket, 19 photos/illustrations, STK# 8145Q $25.95 CONTRIBUTORS JUAN CARLOS ISCARA AL-BAGHDADI • FR.PATRICK • MUHAMMAD MARC BOSSUYT, PH.D., J.D. • DR. John Fullerton (USA) www.angeluspress.org THE ANGELUS • November 2005 4 FATIMA PILGRIMAGE of REPARATION 2005 Your Excellency, what is the importance of the message of Fatima for the Church and world in 2005? Well, 2005 is not a special time in and of itself. However, we may say that Fatima is present today as it was in 1917. By this I mean that nothing has been lost, nothing belongs to the past of the message of Fatima. We are still absolutely within the time-frame of Fatima. The message is the same and the consequences are the same. Essentially, this means that the world continues to go the way of sin, yet there has been this serious, twofold warning from heaven. I say twofold, because there is a warning of temporal significance, i.e., what will happen on earth and it is a great threat of terrible plagues upon the earth, amongst them war. Remember, Fatima occurred in the midst of World War I. Further, there was the warning of a second war if the world did not convert. This is one side of the warning, but more dramatically, there was a warning of eternal consequences, namely the question of what would happen to the souls of those who did not convert. This was the occasion for the dramatic vision of hell, and not merely hell, but the crowds of numerous people falling into hell. So there were two warnings there about sin and its consequences. There is also, however, a twofold invitation: firstly, to immediate penance and prayer; and secondly, the great hope that God, in His mercy, despite the behavior of the world, is again taking the first step and offering a relatively easy way to salvation: His Mother and Her Immaculate Heart. INTERVIEW: BISHOP FELLAY Isn’t it true that Our Lady asked for something very simple, namely that Russia be consecrated to her Immaculate Heart? Today, Rome believes that has been done. What are your comments? Rome pretends that it has been accomplished and they base this claim on words from Sr. Lucia herself. I read an interview she gave to a Cardinal where she claims that around 1985 there was to be an atomic war, which was stopped by the first consecration performed by Pope John Paul II of the world to Our Lady. This consecration was something, but one could say it was “halfway,” for it is not what Our Lady requested, namely the consecration of Russia by the Holy Father and the bishops of the entire world. But even though most participated, not all the bishops of the world participated in this consecration anyway. I have been told, as well, that here in Fatima, the bishop of Fatima in 2000 announced that the consecration of Russia would be done by the Pope on October 8th of that year. Further, he told the faithful at the basilica that the Holy Father had requested that the statue of Fatima be brought to Rome for that occasion. Now, the occasion was the Jubilee of the bishops, which means that many of the bishops of the world THE ANGELUS • November 2005 www.angeluspress.org Y 5 would have been present in Rome at the time. This makes us suspect that if there were such actions on the part of the Holy Father, it means he was not so sure himself that Russia had indeed been consecrated. Also, we can be sure it was not something the bishop mentioned accidentally since he did so three times. He spoke expressly of the consecration of Russia. And, in fact, on October 8th, nothing of the sort happened; it was just an Act of Entrustment to Our Lady for the world. Do you think the restoration of the Church that Catholics are waiting and praying for is intimately tied up with the consecration of Russia? This is a difficult question. We must distinguish between the two aspects of the question: the temporal side which affects peace in the world, and then the war of souls. If you speak of peace in the world, you do not necessarily look immediately at the Church but at the State. The peace that is promised with the consecration of Russia is a peace on earth, at least somewhere, so to speak. This is because the act of a supernatural consecration of Russia implies that it should also mean peace for the Church. Somewhere we make the link between both, for the spreading of errors from Russia is not only demolishing the State, but also the Church. I may say that such an understanding is perfectly feasible, and I would even go so far as to say that to understand Fatima, we must understand it in this fashion. Your Excellency, we know that Russia has not yet been converted. What is the situation in Russia today? Well, there is definitely more freedom for the Orthodox now than there was before 1989, so in this sense, the Orthodox are more free to move. But this is the Orthodox. It has nothing to do with the conversion of Russia or the return of the Orthodox to the Catholic Church. The schismatic Orthodox are adamant to continue their way apart from Rome, in fact. I do not think that there is much deep change in Russia. Though they lurk behind the scenes, the Communists are no longer “on top.” It is now more liberal, with capitalism and the mafia, if you want. So the Church goes its way, but the Church and State are very closely linked there. I do not see any indications of the Orthodox coming back to the Catholic Church. What happened in Fatima in 2004 to trigger this Pilgrimage of Reparation on the part of the Society? Obviously there are many scandalous things going on in the Church, but why would the event of the Hindus practicing their ritual in the Capelhina be singled out? Granted, right now in the whole world, there are a lot of scandals which are the product of ecumenism, either directly or else they are at least the product of inter-religious behavior which is simply indifferentism. Such scandals do exist everywhere. What moved us about the events which happened in the Capelhina to do something now was that it was simply “the last drop,” the drop that was too much. For these ecumenists to dare allow that to happen in Fatima is too much. This is the very place where Heaven made the effort to come and speak to the world and ask men to pay attention to God, to remind men that there is one God, that these questions are serious, and that although He is our Creator, He will also be our Judge. Here in Fatima, you have a sort of summary of Catholic doctrine and life. It was precisely here at the heart where this attack happened. It was not the Hindus’ actions themselves that was the real problem, rather it was the fact that it happened here with permission. Probably, those who allowed it were not even aware of the gravity of what they did, but the very fact that it was even possible to happen shows how far we’ve gone. It is like the tip of the iceberg which was a good occasion for us to ring an alarm precisely because of this shocking violation of the First Commandment, a true sacrilege. There are many similar things happening today, it is true, but this one precisely, hurting the Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was something we could not let pass. The honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary was at stake. Your Excellency, the conciliar Church does not really see the gravity of the situation. It marches under the banner of ecumenism and while we protest, it thinks it is performing a work of charity. It considers us intransigent and self-centered. What is the proper perspective on this issue? Charity starts with truth. It is very simple, really. Let’s say a man who is planning to board a train asks you whether the train goes to New York. You know that it goes to Chicago. If you tell him it does go to New York, you are lying. Now, if someone challenged you and asked you why you told him that, would it make sense to reply, “Well, it was charity, and I didn’t want to hurt him. He seemed to like that train so much.” That is not charity; it is exactly the contrary! And it is the same with all these false religions which pretend to lead people to heaven when in fact they lead them to hell. To tell people it is all right to take a false road is a lie and the exact opposite of charity. Saying the truth in such situations may cause trouble, but it is still the truth. In fact, friction is often one of the effects of truth when you have to deal with someone who is in error. Why is it that we are not allowed to enter into this ecumenical dialogue? It seems there is room for everyone but us. Precisely. Consider what happened even during this pilgrimage. The Hindus were given open doors, allowed to go even to the altar. To us, however, the www.angeluspress.org THE ANGELUS • November 2005 6 barrier was closed and they refused us entrance. We had to remove that, and we did, but on their side it was a clear expression that ecumenism is not for us. In some aspects it is logical, and in some aspects it is not. If they can allow Hindus to come in, how can they pretend that there is no room for us? But remember there was already a time when there was no room for Someone. It seems to us that there is a lot of piety and devotion places like Fatima and Lourdes. Do traditionalists see a contradiction here? We obviously see no problem in the devotion of the people. We do have a problem, however, with the way in which this devotion is misled. The hearts of Catholics simply expect to receive the right food, which is the food of the Faith, the truth, and grace. If they come here, it is to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. The problem is not on their side; the problem is in the leaders who lead them the wrong way. Many faithful came to Fatima for the Pilgrimage of Reparation. Can you expound on how exactly we did make reparation this weekend? We did many things for reparation. Primarily, we celebrated Mass for reparation. We had night vigils of prayer in front of the Blessed Sacrament. We followed the Way of the Cross, and we had a procession to the Capelhina, saying the Rosary explicitly for reparation. The whole pilgrimage truly was carried out in a spirit of reparation. We were not allowed through the gates and an attempt was made to drown us out by turning up the speakers. What are your thoughts? Well, it started with the vacuum cleaners, then the Sisters, and then the loudspeakers. They definitely do not like us and it was entirely a provocation on their part. We had met with the authorities before, everything was prepared, they knew we were coming, and they knew we were taking an “empty time” where nothing else was scheduled so that we would not disturb their program. The entire episode was pure provocation on their part. So they knew we were coming? Absolutely. We were fair. We went to see them and told them what we were going to do and when. It seems as if the whole word accepts this universal toleration of beliefs. It’s only the “extremists” who challenge this principle who are considered “nasty.” The little Society of Saint Pius X seems to often stand alone in denouncing this craziness. Well, the Muslims are treated better than us. We are treated not much better than the devil, whom they don’t believe in anymore anyway. We weren’t welcome in Fatima and that was clear by where we had to say the Mass and where we had to gather, in a field rather distant from the shrine. Why this location? Part of it was practicality. It was one thing which we could rent with some relative ease. Last time, pressure was put on owners of other grounds so that we would not be able to use them. The Society recently issued a dossier entitled From Ecumenism to Silent Apostasy which was sent to the Holy Father and all the Cardinals. Now we have this Pilgrimage of Reparation. Do we expect any response from Rome? Also, are we trying to send a message to Rome and try to wake up Rome by this pilgrimage? No, not directly. The first intention really is reparation, which is already enough. For a long time, we have realized that we do better to deal with heaven than with men. I can say, with my eyes closed, that the results shall be more effective when we deal with God rather than His saints. The Holy Father is in Cologne at World Youth Day while we are in Fatima. Do you think he is aware of our presence here? Maybe. I cannot presume that. Who is funding the ecumenical basilica they are building here in Fatima? What is this costing and where is the money coming from? First of all, the money is coming from here. Such a place of pilgrimage receives a lot of money. There are still many generous Catholics who will give great amounts of money for the Blessed Virgin Mary, that she may be honored. It is not such a problem to get the money for this building. The cost is 50 million euros [almost $60 million in US dollars–Ed.], which is a rather large amount. I have been told that perhaps there has been a contribution from the United Nations, but this claim has not been verified yet. Now that the Fatima pilgrimage is over, do you think we succeeded in what we set out to do? I think so, on several levels. First, things went well, despite the disturbance at the Capelhina. Speaking generally, things went very well. Everything was wonderful and beautiful. There was great devotion and it was a real pleasure to see all the faithful devout and modestly dressed. Everything is coherently correct in front of God and we see all these signs of Catholic life and the Faith in all aspects. So I am sure that a lot of true reparation went to heaven in these days, which was the purpose. Beyond that, it was a respectable show of strength for the faithful with all the priests and seminarians encouraging everyone to persevere, which is a very great reason to thank God for everything. 7 Finally, Your Excellency, where do we go from here? We merely continue. Yesterday, I read that the President of the Bishops’ Conference in France, who is also a member of the Ecclesia Dei Commission and is thus well-placed to say such things, said it was very clear that we have to respect and be kind to all traditionally-minded people...provided they accept the Council and the New Mass. So nothing has changed. We must simply continue. FATIMA PILGRIMAGE of REPARATION 2005 INTERVIEW: BISHOP WILLIAMSON I think the most important question to ask, regarding Fatima itself, is this: What significance does Fatima have for both the world and Church in 2005? I think Fatima was one of the two great lights of God for the poor 20th century, the other one being Pascendi. Fatima was a great illumination for the Church and for politics as well. I say this because of the reference to Russia spreading her errors throughout the world, which is a religious problem with very grave political consequences. The consequences arrived in spades because the religious message was not sufficiently heeded. Recall that the Mother of God complained to Sr. Lucia at some point that people were not paying attention to her message. Further, I think it is accurate to say that without the reaction of the Portuguese people from 1917 on, the hierarchy www.angeluspress.org THE ANGELUS • November 2005 8 would never have approved anything, which they did in 1930. I say this only because the hierarchy is generally so anti-apparition. Nevertheless, it was a tremendous orientation going down to and including the Third Secret, which was not revealed in 1960 and has not been revealed since. Almost certainly the content involves the loss of the Faith and the apostasy we are witnessing today. If it had been revealed in 1960 as the Mother of God wished, it would have been a tremendous monkey wrench thrown in the way of Vatican II and this is precisely the reason why it was hidden, has been hidden ever since, and is still being hidden. When Pope Benedict XVI was still Cardinal Ratzinger, a few years ago, he went to speak to an Austrian bishop with whom he is friends. Cardinal Ratzinger told this bishop there were two things on his conscience–Fatima and Archbishop Lefebvre. He said in the case of Fatima, his hand was forced. (Although this is an aside, with regards to Archbishop Lefebvre, Cardinal Raztinger simply stated that he failed.) Nevertheless, his comment about Fatima means that the Cardinal knew he was taking part in a campaign of deceit on the part of Rome to smother the message of Fatima, down to and including recent attempts on the part of Roman authorities to smother Fatima. This is because what the Mother of God said runs directly contrary to the craziness and crisis in the Church, and if many people followed what the Mother of God did say at Fatima, there would be no crisis in the Church. Your Excellency, Rome has claimed repeatedly that the consecration to Russia has been completed. Is this true? No. Didn’t Pope John Paul II do it on three separate occasions though? He never did it exactly in the manner in which the Mother of God requested. She asked in 1929 that Russia be consecrated–not the world–by the Holy Father in union with the bishops of the world. This has never happened. The Holy Father, even Pius XII, has made one or two efforts in that direction, and each occasion, the effort has been blessed with some fruits. However, it has never been done as the Mother of God wished, thus it has not achieved its effect. The whole world, though, is waiting for this consecration to take place, and when it takes place, this wretched situation we have will begin to turn around. Since the Son of God said, essentially, “Russia must be consecrated to the Heart of My Mother,” if Our Lord allowed anything else to sort out this crisis, He would be making a liar out of His Mother, which is not possible. Everything then depends upon this consecration. Recall further that Our Lord said, around the early 1930’s, that the consecration would be done, but it would be late. It appears similar to THE ANGELUS • November 2005 www.angeluspress.org the situation in France in the 18th century with the Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus which would have prevented the French Revolution. Louis XVI performed it in jail, before he got his head cut off, but it was too late. Similarly this time, eventually the Pope is going to do it, whether it is Benedict XVI or his successor. It will be done, but it is already very late. Globalism is running rampant and globalism is simply mutated communism; it is the same revolution. Traditional Catholics are hoping, praying, and waiting for the day when the Church will be restored. Is the consecration to Russia the answer? Yes. If there is one simple answer, that is it. Without that, God would be making His Mother a liar. With that, at last men will be doing the simple thing that God put in their hands in 1929 to head off this crazy, insane modern world. Until men do it, the sick modern world will continue to go its crazy way. Can you say a few words about what happened in Fatima in 2004 that prompted Bishop Fellay to ask for this Pilgrimage of Reparation? Broadly speaking, the Rector of the Shrine at Fatima organized and presided over an inter-religious service in the sanctuary of Fatima. During this, the Hindus celebrated whatever it is they celebrate in the little chapel of the apparitions, that is, the very site where the Mother of God appeared to the three children six times. On that very spot, the Rector of this Catholic sanctuary invited the Hindus to perform their service. Also, you will notice that there is a circular bunker blocking the entrance to the esplanade of the church. The basilica used to have a magnificent esplanade in front of it with columns on each side, between which the pilgrims used to visit. This is now blocked off because of the construction of a new basilica. This new basilica is certainly not Catholic in style or intent; it is meant to be interreligious and ecumenical. In other words, Catholicism is not the one, unique, exclusive truth anymore. It is merely one truth amongst many, which is obviously completely false. You thus have a gigantic monument and a very important ceremony which both deny and desecrate truth. This is reason enough to make some gesture of defense in honor of the truth. Can you say a few words about the evil of ecumenism? Many people think ecumenism is a good thing, e.g., to reach out to other religions. Can you highlight the proper perspective of this? Well, there is a true ecumenism and a false ecumenism. True ecumenism is precisely “Catholic outreach” to all souls in order to attempt to reach them with the truth they need to save their souls. As Ruben Mondalgo used to say, “Get to the lost at any cost.” Rather, “get to the lost with the truth at any 9 cost.” False ecumenism, on the other hand, means reaching out to people, regardless of the truth which, in effect, puts man in front of God. It is to say that our fellow human beings are more important than the truth of God. Of course, Our Lord died on the Cross for the sake of the truth, yet very few people stood with Him. It was the truth of His Father despite what anything or anybody would say or do. In John 6, at the synagogue of Capharnaum, when Our Lord preaches the Eucharist, He realized it would look like cannibalism, and sure enough, practically all of His disciples are scandalized and walk out. Instead of saying “Okay, forget it, I take it back; come back, we will all be friendly and have a great party,” He says to His apostles, “Will you also leave me?” Then St. Peter says, “To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” The apostles don’t abandon Him, but a mass of people do. Our Lord put the truth in front of a mass of people, which is true ecumenism. How can you bring people to God if you abandon God? If you start by abandoning God, how can you bring people to God? If you don’t bring people to God, what is religion about? It becomes just human beings getting together, which is essentially what false ecumenism does. So the difference between true and false ecumenism is like night and day. Obviously, the ceremony which was allowed to take place in the sanctuary of Fatima was very grave, but there have been many abominations perpetrated by the Conciliar Church in the name of ecumenism. Why would the Society pick this specific event and call for a pilgrimage to Fatima itself? Well, the Society could be calling for pilgrimages and ceremonies of reparation all the time. However, let’s suppose Fatima is one of the great lights that God gave to the 20th century, even without the Third Secret revealed. Fatima was designed as God’s answer to the 20th century. If the Church is gouging out the eyes of Fatima, one of the two great lights of the 20th century is being deliberately extinguished, supposing the other light is indeed Pascendi. So Fatima has a special importance, and the desecration of Fatima therefore has a special gravity. This is why the Society decided to make some serious gesture of reparation, humble though it may be, in honor of the truth and the Mother of God. How is it that the Church has fallen so far in just 40 years? How is this possible? Well, the termites were in the woodwork already, so although the wooden building was standing, all of the pillars were worm-eaten and thus one push caused the entire structure to collapse. The woodwork is Catholic doctrine and truth and the worms are subjectivism, modernism, liberalism, and Protestantism, which are all literally one can of worms. And this is what has eaten into the fabric of people’s minds today. If you get into a car today for a drive, everything is human, everything is man-made, everything is man-determined, and everything is rushed. It is against the tranquility of God, thinking, and recollection. Every freeway is against tranquility, thought, reflection, peace of body and mind, and is to the glory of man and his technology to the exclusion of God. The freeway is merely an example, but the entire fabric of people’s lives is anti-God, and if people live an anti-God fabric of life 24/7, they’re going to lose God and the sense of God. The appearances will be kept for a time until one day, they will wake up and realize, “This doesn’t mean anything to me. I’m going to forget it and get rid of it and join the party.” This is what happened at Vatican II and what affects modern man still. Our Lady asked for reparation and we have all come to Fatima to do so. How is reparation being done this weekend? Firstly, it is a long journey. Secondly, there are a lot of ceremonies which can last even three and a half hours in the blazing sunshine. Thirdly, a number of people, especially Germans, took part in a night vigil. Then there is the Way of the Cross and the processions, which are all gestures that are both pious and penitential. Every pilgrim does not necessarily do heavy penance, but almost all of them will do penance. Remember also that the Mother of God told us that the reparation Our Lord asked for was not hair shirts and starving, but the five First Saturdays. This is because an act of spiritual reparation is greater than an act of bodily reparation. This is not to despise acts of bodily reparation, i.e., penance, which are extremely useful in their place. The simple fact of taking part in this pilgrimage is definitely an act of spiritual reparation for the honor of the Mother of God. This is my first time at Fatima, as it is for most of the seminarians. We just recently came from Lourdes, and one of the most noticeable things about both places is the massive amount of Catholics who come from all over the world to these two locations. The Faith seems to be alive and well in such places, such as the daily candlelight processions. What are we to think of this? What we have is especially popular piety surviving the worst that the intellectuals could do. The intellectuals are gone, but the fish rots from the head, so while the head is rotten, parts of the rest of the fish can still be healthy. If the head, however, continues to put out nothing but rot, eventually in 10 or 20 years’ time, perhaps you will find these candlelight processions poorly attended. It is definitely true that at the moment there is still some faith amongst Catholics. One cannot say that within www.angeluspress.org THE ANGELUS • November 2005 10 the official Church there is no faith left. It is simply not true. But if one considers the Faith in that structure, which is held, operated, led, and guided by intellectuals, usually prelates and clerics who are more and more modernist, the outlook is grim for simple people. When a tree is dying, the first thing that dies is the core, but the leaves are still fine. The longer the core goes on rotting, however, eventually even the leaves at the end of the branches give way. So what you see at places like Lourdes and Fatima are the branches which are still bearing some leaf, but if the core continues to rot, it is only a matter of time until even the branches with leaves disappear. at Fatima. So, they lay down certain conditions because they are very leery of a traditional pilgrimage. They don’t like the idea at all. I would further bet you anything you’d like that there were spies of the Rector in our congregation this morning. It’s normal; when Our Lord spoke, there were always some Pharisees watching for false words in order to destroy Him. The Society hopes, as always, that we will have some effect on the official Church. It is basically an illusion to think that we will make a tangible effect with our insignificant numbers, but it’s not, humanly speaking, what counts or really matters. What really matters is what counts in front of God. In 2004, the Society released a dossier entitled From Ecumenism to Silent Apostasy. Is the Society trying to send a message to Rome as well as make a pilgrimage of reparation, and is there any anticipated reaction from the hierarchy? What would Archbishop Lefebvre have thought of what’s being done here today? Firstly, the Society is numerically insignificant, just as Our Lord in His lifetime was numerically insignificant. The Sadducees and Pharisees nevertheless watched what Our Lord was doing very carefully since they knew what He represented, namely, the truth. They knew that He would undermine them. It is similar to the authorities in Rome today. If the Church was in good health, we would be completely insignificant. But since the Church is not in good health, we represent a monkey wrench in their works since we are witnessing to the truth which Rome is trampling on with all our feebleness and faults. And Rome basically knows they are changing the Faith so they want to get rid of us. Thus, the authorities are well aware of a pilgrimage like this and of our presence here. They have told us they don’t mind what we do outside the sanctuary but they have laid down certain conditions for us to be able to enter the sanctuary. This is similar to the pilgrimage to Rome in 2000 when they laid down certain conditions to use the basilicas. For instance, we were not allowed to say Mass either in the Roman basilicas or the sanctuary In 1987, the Archbishop himself led a pilgrimage here, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the apparitions of Fatima. The Archbishop understood the importance of Fatima and he was happy for the Society to do what it could to give some importance to Fatima. He wanted Fatima to enter the bloodstream of the Society, so to speak. I am sure the Archbishop is very happy with what the Society did at Fatima this year since it is entirely in line with the defense of Catholic Tradition. I say this, again, because Fatima is one of the great lights of the 20th (and 21st) century for the Faith and people are still not paying attention to the message. Rather, they are doing their darnedest to smother, twist, and silence the Third Secret of Fatima; they are constructing ecumenical monuments and holding ecumenical ceremonies in order to twist Fatima out of shape. Angelus Press would like to thank Rev. Mr. Paul Robinson and Mr. Michael Sestak, both seminarians of St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary, for the interviews of Their Excellencies Bishops Fellay and Williamson which appear above. They were conducted on-spot during the Fatima Pilgrimage of Reparation. A special thanks to Fr. Yves le Roux, Rector of St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary, for granting the seminarians permission to help Angelus Press. Interviews were transcribed and edited by Angelus Press. SERMON: BISHOP FELLAY My dear Brethren, It is a joy to be here in Fatima for the third time. The other times we came here were for the jubilees of the 70th and 80th anniversaries of the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Fatima. What calls us here this time is the wrath and anger of God caused by what is happening–it is the very hurting against the glory of God and against the honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary! But it is also much more: it is the eradication of the real message of Fatima. These are happenings which are coherent with the new theology that was introduced at the time of the Council, and which has generated AY 11 the New Mass and ecumenism. And so we are here to remember what the Blessed Virgin Mary really said, what she came for! And we especially want to remember that she called for prayer and penance, penance in the sense of expiation, of reparation. This new theology has invented a new god so high that it can no longer be touched, and so they pretend that sin doesn’t do anything to God. In His essence it is true that God is infinitely perfect and that sin cannot wound Him or make Him die. But that does not mean that His glory is not offended! The very definition of sin is that it is an offense against God. And the consequence of it is the necessity in justice to repair, to expiate; and if we don’t, then there is nothing left but punishment. We know that all the sufferings here on earth are the consequence of sin until death, and that the most severe punishment is eternal damnation in hell. It is serious! They have invented a new god who is no longer just and no longer cares. They even pretend that He does not exist. They dispense themselves from penance, from the cross, from expiation! We will see...how the message of Fatima deals with it, in all harmony with Divine Revelation and with the Catholic Faith of all ages. If you want to be saved there is one way, and it is penance. Our Lord says, “If you don’t do penance then you shall perish, all of you!” Those are His words. In Fatima we see something special about reparation, and about this offense against God. Namely, it is that God would have known because He knows all, but would have prepared [something special] for this time of unbelief, doubt, and doctrinal errors. And so without going into difficult things, He gives us a very simple, clear and obvious sign, but really much more than a sign; He gives us a reality so that we may understand what is going on: it is the heart of His mother, a heart surrounded with thorns, thorns which are wounding this heart. It is as if God were to say, “You don’t understand what’s happening to Me when you sin? So look at My mother, who is your mother! Look at what sins do to her. Look at her sufferings.” And when the Blessed Virgin Mary would speak of this necessity of doing penance, of reparation, of expiation for sins, she would say “You console me by doing this reparation.” We repair for the sins done to God, but as sin offends God and the Blessed Virgin Mary, so reparation consoles also the Blessed Virgin Mary and her heart. This is not difficult to understand. God in His simplicity wants to make us understand in this difficult time what is going on. You want to be saved? Do penance and pray. Two words: prayer and penance. This will save us and even others. If there are so many souls who fall into hell it is because nobody does penance for them! These are the words of the Blessed Virgin Mary. That means that by our little sufferings and reparations we can save souls! It is more than that. God wants this cooperation, our cooperation for His work of redemption. He has done all the work on the Cross, but in order that we may be saved we have to unite ourselves to the sufferings and the reparation–we, ourselves, for ourselves and for the others. In His goodness, God does dare to join and even to bind the salvation of souls to our little reparations and sacrifices. And if we don’t? Souls will be eternally lost. So let us go to the Blessed Virgin Mary, let us go to her Immaculate Heart. And it is about this very surprising element of God’s mercy that He is telling us, “You don’t understand that you are hurting me? You don’t understand that you need to repair for Me? Well, then repair for the offenses done to her. Do just that and I’ll give you salvation.” Five first Saturdays done in reparation for the offenses done to the Immaculate Heart, and the Blessed Virgin Mary promises her help at our last instant here on earth in order to be saved. So let us go to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Let us develop this true devotion, which is certainly meek and mild, the devotion of a child to its mother, yet at the same time which is strong and which requires this spirit which is the spirit of Jesus, the spirit of sacrifice! Once again, two words simple enough: prayer and penance. www.angeluspress.org THE ANGELUS • November 2005 FATIMA 12 P ILGRIMAGE of REPARATION 2005 CONFERENCE: FR. DANIEL COUTURE Bishop Fellay explained this morning why we are having this pilgrimage in this odd year 2005 and not 2007, though we had a pilgrimage in 1997 and in 1987. The reason is that the profanation of the shrine which took place last year of all dates happened on the feast of St. Pius V. This is something the Novus Ordo Church doesn’t realize because they have changed the date of St. Pius V’s feast day. But God knows and the devil knows that for traditional Catholics, the fifth is the feast of St. Pius V. In this profanation at the site of the apparition–the very spot where Our Lady appeared to the children–on the altar of that place, the Hindu priests said some Hindu prayers to the devil, to Shiva. You’ve probably seen the pictures. In times past, if an altar was profaned, there had to be a certain ceremony and a reconsecration of the altar in the church. Bishop Fellay also mentioned that it’s not just this act on May 5th of last year that brings us here. It’s not just about a year before in October, 2003, when there was an ecumenical meeting at Assisi and the Society of St. Pius X was the only one who protested, for which we distributed 10,000 leaflets against it. It is not just the building of this multi-faith shrine that they’re building right now. All these things are signs of a greater battle going on. It’s really the battle of the devil against Our Lady, the battle of the two standards: the Woman against the dragon. These are all symptoms that the dragon wants to take Our Lady’s place. In the very old exorcism, the original edition of Pope Leo XIII, it said that where Our Lord has established the See of Peter, there the enemy has also established his seat, his headquarters, obviously THE ANGELUS • November 2005 www.angeluspress.org referring to Rome. A hundred years ago that seemed quite strange, but now we understand. Also, in light of Our Lady of La Salette, Rome shall lose the Faith and become the seat of the anti-Christ. This refers to Rome and the whole Catholic Church. Fatima is something very unique in the whole world. It is a private revelation although it appeals to the whole Church, and it is clear by what is happening that the devil wants to overshadow Our Lady and take over. Now when you drive on the two traffic circles you cannot see the basilica anymore. You used to be able to see the basilica there, but now there is construction going on and the basilica is hidden; and they took down the cross that used to mark the beginning of St. Lucy Street. These things are not happening by accident. Bishop Fellay also mentioned this morning that we are here on a pilgrimage. We must take this seriously, which means making an extra effort to control yourself and not go shopping or do any other activities which distract from the atmosphere of the pilgrimage, which is like a mini-retreat. If you have done the retreats you know there are certain circumstances that favor a good retreat: mortification of the eyes, silence, more prayer, and so on. This is not a party, it’s a pilgrimage of reparation. If you have not done anything extra–the Way of the Cross was a little extra sacrifice–you still have the next 24 hours in which to do something for Our Lady. We will see in a moment how we can make reparation in detail, but tonight at dinner and tomorrow at lunch, cut back a little bit, do something for Our Lady. After all, we are adults. Our Lady appeared to these children 7, 8, and 10 years old, and they would spend a whole month 13 without drinking. Can you spend a day without drinking? Half a day? These children put us to shame. We think that we’re adults and we know it. Well, they were way ahead of us. Let us make a little effort with food and drink, not necessarily regarding quantity, but certainly quality. Do something to show Our Lady you see the thorns in her Immaculate Heart and you want to pull one out. If each one of us would pull one out of her Heart, Our Lady would be pleased with our visit to her shrine. The Message of Fatima First, I would like to give you an overview of the message of Fatima, very briefly. We will see that the whole message of Fatima is reparation to Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart. What does it mean to make reparation to Our Lady? We’ll see the different types of offenses to Our Lady, and, finally, how to make reparation. There’s one thing that comes out very clearly. If you look at the three apparitions of the Angel in 1916 and the six apparitions of Our Lady in 1917, you will notice the word “reparation.” When you read the various words of the message this word reparation always implies pardon. When the angel first appeared to them, he said, “Fear not, I am the angel of peace, pray with me.” And then he taught them the first part of the prayer of Fatima: “O my God, I believe, I adore, I hope, and I love Thee. I ask pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope, and do not love Thee.” So immediately the angel was teaching the children to ask pardon for those who have no faith, those who disbelieve, those who doubt, and those who have false worship. About one-sixth of the world’s people are Catholic. That means over five billion people do not have the true worship of God, so the angel is teaching them the First Commandment: adore. Adore for those who do not adore or adore the devil. The Hindu worship that took place was devil worship, and believe me, you have to go to India to see the diabolical aspect of Hinduism. In Asia, we have Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, and materialism; but of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam, Hinduism is truly the most visibly explicit religion of the devil. They have true devil worship. The monks I saw in Singapore were possessed. They pierced themselves with spears. They walk on burning coals. They still do it today. Publicly, people come for a show. It’s diabolical. They make these shrines in India and people will walk 300 miles to go and worship in a mountain. Nobody knows what’s going on in these shrines, what kind of perversities are taking place. It’s terrible to think that a man from that religion came to profane the shrine of Our Lady. That’s why we must adore as the angel said, “I ask pardon for those who do not believe and do not adore.” So that’s the first apparition of the angel saying, “Pray for yourself and make up for the other people.” We have to make reparation. In the second apparition, again the angel said, “What are you doing? Pray, pray a lot. Offer everything to the Almighty, everything you can think of, little children. Make a sacrifice as an act of reparation.” Again, the word reparation; “...for the sins by which He is offended and supplication for the conversion of sinners.” That’s the second apparition of the angel. And in the third, it was the same thing. In the third, he teaches the second part of the prayer of Fatima: “Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Ghost, I adore Thee profoundly, and I offer Thee the most Precious Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ present in all the tabernacles of the earth in reparation.” In reparation! Why do we say this prayer? In reparation. And also, as you can see, this reparation is very Eucharistic because just before this apparition, as the angel was holding the host and the chalice, the host was dripping in the chalice before 14 he gave them communion. “Take and drink the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ horribly outraged by ungrateful men. Repair their crimes and console your God.” This was the angel speaking; Our Lady had not even come yet. The angel was preparing them, preparing Our Lady’s way. Our Lady came in May, June, July, August, September, and October of 1917, and again Our Lady asked, “Would you offer to God Almighty an act of reparation for sins by which He is offended?” Our Lady mentioned this. That was in June. In May, she appeared with her wounded heart, a heart full of thorns. When your children come to you from walking in the forest and they’ve just run into a thorn bush and now they’ve got thorns stuck on them and you have to pull them out, it pains you. It pains you whenever you see your child in pain. What if they had a nail or thorn in their foot? It’s truly painful. Well, to have a nail in your heart is even more painful. It makes me think of a story in Vietnam. It happened in 1954 or ‘55 when they split Vietnam in two. You may have heard of Dr. Tom Dooley. He was called one night by some children to go and visit somebody who was sick, a priest, so he followed the children through the rice fields until he came to a little hut. He came into the little hut and saw a man lying in bed with a blanket over his head and ladies standing next to him. Was he dead? They pulled the blanket from over his head and the lady said, “This is my brother. He’s a priest. The Communists planted nails in his head.” The nails were still there and nobody knew how to pull them out. So Dr. Dooley had to pull them out. And he came back every day to take care of this poor priest. He did this for about a month until one day he came at the end of that month and couldn’t find him. He was told that the priest went back to his village. They needed him and so he had to go. He didn’t want to wait. Having nails in the head is obviously painful. The Need for Reparation Our Lady showed these thorns in her heart to show the depths of her sorrows. That was in June. In July, she showed them hell and asked them to pray in reparation for sins committed against the Immaculate Heart. This was 1917. In 1925, Our Lady came back to insist again, to follow up on what the angel had said and on what she herself had said. In 1925 she asked for the first five Saturdays in reparation for the offenses against the Immaculate Heart of Mary. And in 1929 she came back for the consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It’s always the Immaculate Heart of Mary. As Bishop Fellay beautifully said this morning, “It’s incredible that God would say ‘There are so many sins, I just don’t know where to start. Where to start? Well, if you just console My Mother, I will be content with that.’” It’s really mind-boggling and hard to believe that God would say that’s all we have to do as a start. We will see that it is in Divine Providence, in the Divine Strategy that we start with this, and then, of course, Our Lady brings us further to other things. THE ANGELUS • November 2005 www.angeluspress.org This is to remind you a little bit of this message of Fatima. It is in reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Let’s go to the Gospel for a moment to analyze and consider the wounds of Our Lord’s Sacred Heart. We see that Jesus reacted very quickly and very strongly when His Father was offended. On two occasions, Our Lord got angry: twice, publicly with the Pharisees. He was strong with them, but when He expelled the buyers and the sellers from the temple: “This is the house of my Father! You have made it a den of thieves.” He would come back to Fatima to do that here again. We see Our Lord as well reacting very strongly when the Holy Ghost is offended. When the Pharisees were whispering, “This man has an impure spirit,” Our Lord said, “The sin against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the sin against the Holy Ghost will not be forgiven. Don’t you dare speak against the Holy Ghost.” Our Lord is defending the honor of the divine charity of the Holy Ghost. But Our Lord was hurt personally throughout the Gospel. He was hurt in a very deep way, mostly by the ingratitude of men. This ingratitude almost killed Him. Ingratitude is painful. 15 Let us think of a time in our lives when, after having been very good to someone, this person turned against you. They just walk away like children who have just received their whole education from you and they’re not grateful–it’s painful. Parents are trying to prepare the future of their children and a child just slams the door or walks away after all these years of effort. It seems that it has all gone down the drain. It hurts. Parents see it happen in our families, to our teenagers losing the Faith even after going to Catholic school. Parents come and cry on our shoulders. “Father, my grown-up kids have lost the Faith.” It hurts. Well, Our Lord has suffered this ingratitude very much, many times. Remember we heard recently about the ten lepers that were cured. Where are the nine others? And in the garden, He said “My soul is sorrowful even unto death.” He would have died had not His divinity sustained Him. When He appeared to St. Margaret Mary in 1689, He showed His heart wounded, bleeding with thorns as well. Our Lord complained to St. Margaret Mary of the ingratitude, contempt, and indifference of men. “After everything I have done, there’s not more of a response from men.” It hurts. And so knowing how Our Lord was treated and Our Lord was rejected by His own people, it will help us to understand Our Lady’s sorrows. You cannot understand well Our Lady’s sorrows unless you understand the link between Our Lady and Our Lord. It is hard to think of Our Lady as the Mother of God, but that is what we have to keep in mind whenever we speak of her. All of her titles are the very first thing God had in mind when He thought of Our Lady. Our Lord did not come like Adam, nor in a chariot of fire like the one Elias was taken away in. No, He came as a little baby, therefore He needed a mother. And from that idea, from that thought, everything else flows in the life of Our Lady. Likewise, all her privileges: the Immaculate Conception, her perpetual virginity, Her motherhood of men, co-redemption, her Assumption; all her titles are connected with her being the Mother of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Let me take another example to help you relate to Our Lady and her sorrows. Think of that other mother about 103 years ago, the mother of St. Maria Goretti. Imagine you were the neighbor of the Goretti family in a very small place just south of Rome. Imagine you heard the noise and everyone calling for help. You walk into the house and you see on the ground a little 11-year-old girl stabbed 14 times. She’s still bleeding and the story goes around that a big man, Alexander, tried to rape her and she resisted, so he stabbed her. Think of the mother. If that happened to one of your daughters and you walked home one day and you saw her on the floor, how would you feel? How would you console such a mother? You know if you had any medical skill you would try to take care of the girl right away. You would try to do something to console her by trying to save the life of the daughter. Keep that in mind because when we speak of Our Lady, she’s a mother, and one great source of her sorrows is precisely that her Son has been stabbed and wounded. And now we come before her and we cannot just be like tourists as so many people in Fatima are. “It’s a nice place, let’s go shopping and then go home.” If you say that, you miss the whole point of Fatima. Who can tell the love of such a Mother for such a Son? The famous Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange says that Our Lady, because of her fullness of grace from the first moment of her immaculate conception, was above and higher than all the saints and all the angels together, and God knows that many saints have had a great love for Our Lord. How much love the Mother of God had for Him. Our Lord said to the Samaritan woman, “If thou didst know the gift of God.” Well, He didn’t have to say that about Our Lady; she knew. She held Him in her hands that Christmas with tears of joy and adoration. Is it possible? Well, yes, it is possible. And from this love flows compassion. Compassion means “to suffer with.” How much you parents suffer with your child even if he just falls off his bicycle or gets hurt at school or God knows what. This bond is stronger than death. Well, you see how Our Lady suffered this ingratitude. She wanted to tell them, “My child is the Messias you are waiting for!” No, there was no room for them. She kept her mouth shut–it was not up to her to reveal the secrets of the King. That was Bethlehem, her home town, the town of King David. In Nazareth, Our Lady got a fright one day. Jesus had left her about 6-8 months, and one day he came back after having fasted 40 days and having seen John the Baptist; one day He went back to Nazareth. Our Lord must have been very pleased to have been back with His mother. So back He stayed at His mother’s house, at His own home, and it was only on the Sabbath that He went to the synagogue to preach. Then He got up and explained the Gospel about the Prophet Isaias: “The spirit of God is upon Me and He has sent Me to preach the good news, the Gospel, to the poor.” And then some people in the synagogue said, “Why don’t you do here in Nazareth the things that you do in Capharnaum?” They could not understand Our Lord. “How come you’re doing these miracles over there when you were brought up here? Why don’t you do miracles here?” Our Lord answered them, “No one is a prophet at home” and so forth. And they got angry. We are talking about Our Lord’s public life. They got up and grabbed Him and Our Lord allowed them to do that. They brought Him to the top of a cliff and they tried to push Him over. Our Lady must have heard the shouting and you know she must have always been pondering this prophecy of Simeon that a sword shall pierce her heart. She knew the sacrifice was going to come, so she may have wondered, “Is it today”? They were going to throw Him off the cliff in Nazareth! And then mysteriously, St. Luke says, He walked away. We all know what happened. They froze and Our Lord just walked away or else He just disappeared. At that very spot they erected a church to Our Lady of Sorrows, for Our Lady weeping. She did not know if that was going to be the time. She must have heaved a great sigh of relief when she saw the people going back and Our Lord safe. She knew something had happened, and that He had not died. This was Nazareth where Our Lady saw the ingratitude of her own neighbors. It happened in Jerusalem as well, in the holy city where Our Lord was received triumphantly on Palm Sunday. Our Lady, on Good Friday, heard everybody shouting for the crucifixion, for His death. Just think of it! Perhaps some of you are mothers of priests. When you know that your son may be arrested or put to death for being a good priest, you know that parents witnessing the death of their children has happened before. You have in the Books of Machabees the mother who saw her seven children being led to death. It’s hard, but especially when it’s done by those who should have acknowledged Him as the Savior, that was even harder. Our Lady suffered as much as Our Lord at the ingratitude of the apostle, one traitor among the twelve. That was tough. It was not the Romans, not even people Jesus had cured, it was one of His own who turned the heel against Him. Our Lady must have been thinking how much He’s hurt, betrayed by one of the twelve, and that wounded her as well. We have a reminder every day at Mass of all this ingratitude of men towards Our Lord which Our Lady felt in the Last Gospel, which St. John wrote after having lived with Our Lady. St. John must have been very impressed when Our Lady spoke of the story of the Nativity or other events. He must have observed Our Lady speaking of the sorrowful side of these mysteries, and wrote it down: “He came to His own and His own received Him not.” In the history of the Church God has raised special congregations, hundreds and hundreds of men and women who devoted their whole lives to contemplating and consoling Our Lady, to preaching Our Lady’s sorrows, for instance, the Servites, a famous order of great apostles, or the Passionists, who preach the Passion of Our Lord and the sorrows of Our Lady. The Redemptorists are also very famous for preaching the Passion–of course, most of the orders have preached the Passion. Some of them are more dedicated to the Passion, and by the will of God it is one aspect of the Society of Saint Pius X to have devotion to Our Lady of Compassion. Our Sisters and Oblates are very much devoted to Our Lady of Sorrows. So you see, when we think of www.angeluspress.org THE ANGELUS • November 2005 28 Fatima, we have to think of Our Lady as the Mother of God, and we’re going to make reparation because she’s wounded, she’s hurt. Her Immaculate Heart Is Offended How is she hurt? She is hurt in two ways: indirectly and directly. She is hurt indirectly by all the modern offenses against Our Lord, and particularly against the Holy Eucharist. She knows. Was she there when Jesus spoke of the Bread of Life during the famous sermon in St. John, Chapter 6: “And she saw the people going away”? Was she there perhaps at the multiplication of the loaves? She knew how much Our Lord wanted to give Himself. “What a burning desire I have had to eat this Passover with you. You have no idea how much I have been waiting for this day of the institution of the Holy Eucharist.” It is something mind-boggling for the angels: God would become our food. “Your fathers ate the manna in the desert and they are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever.” “This is My Body.” When Our Lord said “This THE ANGELUS • November 2005 www.angeluspress.org 29 is My Body” in Our Lady’s hearing, she could say, “Yes, I gave it to Him.” In a very special way the very physical part of Our Lord’s Body comes from Our Lady, and so what Jesus owes to His mother is precisely His very physical side. He owes everything to His mother. We mentioned a moment ago the third apparition of the angel at Fatima when He was holding the host and the host was dripping, and he said “Take and drink the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, who is horribly outraged in this sacrament. Console your God.” The angel said that He is horribly outraged, and that was in 1916, not 2005. In 1916, Portugal had the traditional Mass all over, the traditional Mass was celebrated the world over. Why does the angel say “horribly outraged”? What would he say today? Obviously, the angel saw the profanation of the shrine by this Hindu worship that took place last year. He saw all these New Masses as well, which are a profanation of the Holy Eucharist. He saw this false worship which is against the Holy Eucharist, the Trinity, the Redemption. And don’t forget the Hindus as well in their worship at the Capelhina last year not only profaned the altar, but they profaned Our Lady as well by making her a goddess. I once met a Hindu on a plane. He told me there were three million gods amongst the Hindus, so Our Lady is just one more. But that is an insult. We read in the Acts of the Apostles that St. Paul had performed miracles in Athens and they wanted to worship him. “No, I’m only a man, only a creature.” Well, these Hindus worship Our Lady as they would worship other Hindu goddesses. So that’s an insult. How did we get this far? How did we get to Fatima? What do you think Pius XII or St. Pius X would have thought if they had known what is happening today? St. Pius X died at the thought of the First World War about to begin. He knew that this blood bath was about to start, and that literally killed him. How would he have reacted had he known what would happen in Fatima, if he had known there would be this pagan worship, these heretical gatherings taking place? Communism and the New Mass There has certainly been a progression. The principles swallowed at Vatican II are now blossoming with this construction and its whole mentality. I would like just to highlight one little aspect of Fatima and the New Mass through www.angeluspress.org THE ANGELUS • November 2005 30 the means of Communism; there is a link between Communism and the New Mass. When I mention Communism I’m sure you’re all thinking of Russia. “It is in Eastern Europe, China, Vietnam–okay, it’s there, our priests have been there, it’s for real. But that does not really concern us here in the United States.” Well, it does, very much so, since Communism is all over the world in every country. Let me prove it to you a little bit through the angle of the New Mass. As you know, Pius XI condemned Communism in 1937. He should have consecrated Russia to the Immaculate Heart. He got the request in 1931 but he did not want to do it because he was sending missionaries at that moment to Russia, and that would have possibly provoked some problems. It is when the missionaries were killed that he said, “You cannot dialogue with Communists; it is intrinsically perverse.” Then he wrote Divini Redemptoris [available from Angelus Press. Price: $1.75–Ed.]. The message of Fatima spread in the 1940’s and 1950’s. However, when Vatican II was about to be convened Pope John XXIII made an agreement with Moscow that there would be no public condemnation of Communism. That was a condition for the Russian Orthodox to be able to come to the Council. And Archbishop Lefebvre brought to the Secretary of the Council a list of 454 names asking for the condemnation of Communism, which is the greatest social plague in the 20th century and they lost it, they “misplaced” that list at the critical moment. So then, the Second Vatican Council did not condemn Communism and it was supposed to deal with the problems of modern times. As a result or a step further in this regression, this retreat from the battle against Communism, four years later the New Mass came in. We in Asia had to dwell a little bit on this particularly because of our work. We have to deal with Chinese, trying to enlighten people who are in China or outside of China on how to keep the Faith in a Communist regime and trying to pass on to the underground Catholics who are in China who are persecuted. All of them are underground and they all have the New Mass. And so we have tried to make the people understand that you cannot fight Communism with the New Mass. Why? Because the New Mass has the ideas of Communism. Here are four specific areas: 1) Communism is man-centered. There is no God, there’s only man. I saw once in a Chinese city a huge billboard in front of a condominium. I asked my interpreter what it said. “Let us build a new world based on man.” That’s Vatican II! Paul VI said, “We more than anyone else have the worship of man.” At the end of the Council, everything was human: human conscience, these inalienable human rights, and so forth. Well, that is the whole idea of Communism, which says there is no God, only man. And the whole THE ANGELUS • November 2005 www.angeluspress.org new liturgy is man-centered. That is very, very clear. There you have one Communist idea. 2) Having rejected God, you reject at the same time authority because all authority comes from God. And therefore Communism promotes liberty and equality for all. It’s revolutionary, the mass of the people rebelling against those in authority. You have no right to have authority. We will decide, it’s the people’s power. So they invert the pyramid. In the New Mass it’s the same thing. You have just witnessed a beautiful pontifical Mass with all the ranks from the bishop down. Even among the acolytes, there’s a first acolyte and a second acolyte and so forth. The one who has to incense has to incense according to a certain order. Everything God does is orderly. The universe is made orderly and the Church is very much done in order. Communism is against order. So in the new liturgy they have leveled everything. They have concelebrations. They have now leveled the people and the priest and this whole notion of hierarchy is gone. That’s a very strong communist idea. 3) Communism is a system of lies. There are so many lies all over these countries in all directions. Think of all these countries: Vietnam, Russia, China. In all of these countries, those who are inside don’t know what is happening outside. The Party controls the media. For example, in China, you cannot access certain news sites because they control them and they are blocked. Why? Because they do not want people to know what is happening outside. And so they “create” reality. They tell the people, “You have the best lot and you should be very happy. We take care of you. If you knew what was happening, you would know how terrible it is outside.” So the people inside are being told lies about what is happening outside, and all the people outside don’t know what’s happening inside because they’re twisting the reality of what’s really happening. In Vietnam, about 70% of the children are undernourished; 70%! Nobody knows that. And the higher members of the Party, about 500-1000, are multi-billionaires! And you have 70% of the nation, especially the youth, who are almost starving. We don’t hear these things. We hear lies. So how does this apply to the New Mass? There are a lot of lies around this new liturgy. Lies in relation, not to inside and outside, but in relation to today and yesterday. They will tell us, “Now you should be happy, now you understand what is going on up there with the priest at the altar. In the old days they didn’t have a clue. It was all in Latin and nobody knew Latin and it was all mysterious. You couldn’t see what the priest was doing because he was turning his back, and now you know what the priest is doing. You should be so happy 31 now you know what is going on.” Of course, in the old days, people died for the Mass. Nowadays they’re not dying for the Mass. Go to Ireland or England, go to Vietnam or China; people died for the old Mass in these places. First of all, it is false that people did not know Latin in the old days. Back then people knew much more Latin than they do today. Latin was taught in schools and people knew quite a lot. They knew that the Mass is not a question of understanding every word the priest says. It’s a mystery! And by throwing away Latin you could say they threw out the baby with the bath water. Well, if that’s all it is, then why bother going to Mass? So now nobody goes. So, there are lies in relation to getting the lay people involved with the liturgy. “Come on, we must participate. You see, before Vatican II, the lay people did nothing and were kept away. You know it was a male chauvinist society, the priests were running everything.” Excuse me, but I was not born long before Vatican II. For many of you who were in Ireland or those of you who come from Ireland you know that the Legion of Mary started in 1921, and it was very active. You have the St. Vincent de Paul Society and all these third orders around the world where the lay people were very active, much more active than they are today. In the fifties in the Philippines they were opening one presidium of the Legion of Mary every hour. That’s a group of five to ten people starting. For a number of years they were opening a new group of legionaries every hour! And the Legion of Mary was strong in China. It started only in 1947 or ‘49 by Fr. McGrath. This priest was alone in the center of China where his bishop sent him the handbook for the Legion and said, “I don’t have any priests; take this.” In those days the priest respected the bishop so he said, “Well, if the bishop sent this to me, maybe I should study it.” He was from Dublin and did not know the Legion very well, so he studied the book. In one year when he put it into practice he did so much work and put in so much effort that the Legion spread very fast throughout China. By 1955, Mao Tse Tsung said himself that the Legion of Mary was the number one enemy of China. On September 8 we will be recalling the 50th anniversary of the first big arrest in Shanghai. It happened on September 8, 1955, when Cardinal Kung and a few thousand people were arrested along with a number of priests and faithful among whom some are probably still alive today. Communism is a system of lies, and around the New Mass we find a lot of these lies about what was happening before. 4) Communism’s whole regime makes people believe that they have the power. It’s people power, which is a big lie again. We know that it’s the Party which is running everything. The New Mass is the same thing. They changed it and said, “We did it for the people! The people asked for it.” The people did not ask for this. They did not ask for Communion in the hand, it was imposed on them. And people did not ask for all these things. It was run by a clique of modernists who run everything. And the congregation is made to believe that it’s all necessary for the celebration of Mass. Not just the people, but the priests themselves believe that. Bishop Fellay said that about 60 percent of Novus Ordo priests will not say Mass if they’re alone. Sixty percent world wide! Why should I say Mass? There’s nobody here. That thinking implies that the people are necessary for the Mass. Well, they’re not. The priest may say it alone. A monk in a monastery may be alone for months and he can say Mass. The Mass is infinite! It’s the sacrifice of Our Lord. Of course the fruits of the Mass will be received in more souls if there are people there, but if the priest is alone the Mass is still of infinite value. And so it’s an illusion. Lately when all these lay people are taking part in the Mass, it’s an illusion that they have the power just as in Communism. Lies again. So this is what we are trying to tell our friends over there in Asia. We cannot fight Communism with the New Mass. And they are very sensitive to that. You talk about the crisis in the Church, and they have problems understanding what is happening in the rest of the world. They’ve been cut off for 30 years. They won’t believe the things you tell them. Maybe you’ve seen the book Peter Lovest Thou Me? [available from Angelus Press. Price: $14.95–Ed.] and all the pictures in it. I showed this to a priest in Vietnam and said, “Father, look at this book. This is what happened!” And he said, “No, these are fake photos, not true ones. It cannot be.” It’s a fact–they refuse to believe the reality. So if they cannot accept reality, the scandal happening at Assisi and all these things, then it seems that they’re very sensitive to the ideas of Communism. They know that. They’re personally fighting Communism. So Fatima has a very clear Eucharistic aspect from the angel asking reparation for today for the profanation of the altar at the Capelhina on the feast of St. Pius V. And when we see these Eucharistic profanations, what should we do? I think we should think of the Last Supper when, just before instituting the Blessed Sacrament, Our Lord said these painful words, “One of you will betray me.” They all got up. “Is it I Lord, is it I?” Everybody was asking this and everybody got up except one–John. They were all leaning on their left elbows and reclining in their seats while John rested in front of Our Lord. We know that from the details of the Gospel. And when John heard Our Lord say this–and no doubt there must have been a sadness in that voice– he thought, “There is a traitor here!” St. John rolled on himself and he ended up leaning on the Sacred Heart and St. John must have been thinking, “How hurt, my dear Lord, how hurt You must be! Is it possible? One of us? If You say so then it will be so, but poor Jesus! After everything You did for us, after all the years of teaching, the miracles, and yet one of us will betray You! We were the chosen ones, we were your intimate friends www.angeluspress.org THE ANGELUS • November 2005 32 and yet there is a traitor amongst us.” It’s much worse than if it was one of the Pharisees or one of the ungrateful lepers. But no, it is one of His own who turns his heel against Him. Well, that is what the angel is saying to us here at Fatima: “Console your God horribly outraged in this sacrament.” Fatima has a Eucharstic message. We should ask ourselves if we are all convinced about hanging on to the traditional Mass. Let us hang on to the Mass in a spirit of reparation as well. And whenever we hear this profanation, whatever type it is, that takes place especially around the Mass in the sacred liturgy, then let us be like St. John. Kneel down and take your crucifix and kiss the Sacred Heart and say “My Jesus, I’m sorry!” If a priest, bishop, or the pope does this, “My Jesus, I’m sorry.” Let us console Him. These are what I call the indirect offenses against the Immaculate Heart. By offending Our Lord there’s repercussion in the Immaculate Heart because we’re offending Her Son and she knows what this has cost Him. Now let us look at the direct offenses against the Immaculate Heart, those which Our Lord has specified here in Fatima. One of our priests, Fr. Labouche, who was superior of Portugal for a while, has just written a booklet, The Immaculate Heart of Mary Outraged [as yet unpublished–Ed.], and I will read you just a few examples of these profanations which have taken place. As Bishop Fellay said, these certainly call the wrath of God to awaken in a frightening way. If Jesus stood up to defend the honor of His Father and of the Holy Ghost, He’s going to stand up one day to defend the honor of His Mother. “Don’t you dare touch my Mother!” His mother is the most precious creature that He has made. St. Thomas himself says, “It’s one of the three things God could not have done better than He has done. These three things are the Incarnation, the glory of heaven, and His Blessed Mother.” God could not have made a creature more perfect than Our Lady. So when we offend Our Lady, it does not go unnoticed. For the Honor of Our Lady I will give you an example of how Our Lady’s honor is being touched. But, first of all, why the first five Saturdays? Sister Lucia asked Our Lord explicitly that question: Why five? Because before 1917, of course, there was the devotion of the nine first Fridays and there was a devotion of the fifteen first Saturdays, and they still have this devotion. Many congregations still practise it. Well, Our Lord answered, because there are five types of offenses or blasphemies uttered against the Immaculate Heart of Mary: blasphemies against the Immaculate Conception, blasphemies against her virginity, against the divine motherhood by refusing to acknowledge her also as mother of men, blasphemies of all those seeking publicly to put in the heart of children indifference or contempt or even hatred against the immaculate Mother, and, lastly, offenses of those who outrage her directly in her holy images and statues. Let’s look in detail at all the blasphemies publicly spread by all the Protestant sects all over the world against Our Lady, against her virginity. “Jesus had many brothers and sisters. Our Lady had many children.” That is a blasphemy against her virginity. It’s a dogma of our Faith. It’s revealed in Scripture that Our Lady was a virgin. Fr. Labouche says that he saw in Portugal a few years ago members of a sect called the Universal Kingdom of God distributing leaflets telling people to break statues of Fatima here in Portugal, promising them the blessings of God. Well, it is true that Luther in 1523 said, “I would like to completely get rid of the worship of Mary because of the abuse which is being made of it.” So the disciples of Luther are doing the same thing today. In Brazil, one of the greatest Catholic nations in the world, a Protestant pastor on national TV gave a kick to the statue of Our Lady of Aparecida, patroness of Brazil. Imagine if in Ireland they would kick Our Lady of Knock on TV, calling her a horrible doll! God sees these THE ANGELUS • November 2005 www.angeluspress.org 33 The Church in Notre Dame de l’Osier, France. things. There are sins crying to heaven for vengeance, and the insults of our Blessed Mother are certainly among them. You may have heard, around December of last year in Argentina, again there was a sacrilegious, blasphemous exhibition against Our Lady. The theme was Our Lady having conceived by the Holy Ghost. Our faithful in Argentina reacted by organizing a procession to the Cathedral. But they went to see the parish priest in the Cathedral where it was taking place. “Father, do something about it. Our Lady is being insulted!” The priest said that it was none of his concern. This, I think, would hurt more than the actual blasphemies themselves, because we know they’re done by the enemies of God. But for a priest to do nothing? If their earthly mother were being publicly abused, then they would jump up and do something, but they have lost that devotion to Our Lady. It’s one of the tragedies of the modern clergy. Here in Fatima on the front page of the magazine of the shrine of Fatima, October 28, 2003, (it’s called the Noticias de Fatima) headlines read: “A Sanctuary to Many Creeds.” Another magazine of the Blue Army read “Fatima, a Call to the Unity of www.angeluspress.org THE ANGELUS • November 2005 34 Christians, Muslims, and Jews.” So Fatima, according to them, is Jesus and Barabbas on the balcony. We’re back to that; we’re living the Passion all over again. “Choose.” “Okay, fine, let’s unite both.” Then Father gives a whole list of blasphemies and then he explains why they are all attacks against the mediation of Our Lady. And the Vatican has said explicitly: “In the name of ecumenism we cannot define this truth. Maybe it is theologically dependable, but because of Vatican II, because of the direction Vatican II has given, now it is not appropriate to define this truth.” There was a group of 39 theologians called the Group des Dombes (named after a place in France) who studied between 1990-1996. Twenty were Protestant and 19 were Catholic. These 39 published a study on Our Lady and ecumenism. Unfortunately, the Vatican is following the conclusion of their study, which is full of these ecumenical errors, if not heresies, where they say that Our Lady at the foot of the Cross was not meriting for us in any other way than any one of us Christians. So notice the subtlety here: you have opposite errors where they bring down Our Lady and make her just like one of us. This means we could say that she’s not the Immaculate Conception, or on the other hand, you could say that we are all Immaculate Conceptions! It’s just like what Martin Luther says about the priests: a priest is just an ordinary man, and then he turns around and says that everyone is a priest. Well, they’re insulting Our Lady by denying everything, even her divine motherhood. There’s a shrine in France called Our Lady of Laus. It’s an apparition approved by the Church in 1668. A Protestant asked this lady to whom Our Lady was appearing, “Can we be saved in Protestantism?” And the seer replied, “Well, I leave that up to God.” Our Lady came back later and said, “Listen, my daughter, because you have too much human respect and you fear to say the truth, you will not see me for a while, because of human respect.” She was afraid to hurt them and their feelings. Another apparition of our Lady at a French village that today is called Notre Dame de l’Osier (see picture p33), happened in 1649, She appeared to a Calvinist who did not want to bother too much about her. Our Lady threatened him, saying, “Your end is going to come soon. Unless you convert, you’re going to be one of the hottest charcoals in hell. But if you convert, I will protect you before God.” At the end he got scared and he did convert. In Japan they have changed the Hail Mary, and in the Japanese Hail Mary, it’s no longer “Blessed art thou amongst women.” They removed the phrase “amongst women.” It’s just “blessed art thou.” Our Lady is no longer unique, she is no longer the one woman who will crush the devil’s head; she’s just a woman. That’s a blasphemy against her. Father mentioned that he had heard from a reliable source that there’s a secret society which THE ANGELUS • November 2005 www.angeluspress.org has operated for many years, of which the members commit themselves to insult Our Lady; they give money, toys, and sweets to children to recite litanies of blasphemy against her. There’s a counter-miraculous medal that has been made with “O Mary conceived with sin.” The devil knows who he is fighting. Of course, you have all the movies that are done against Our Lady. So these are the direct offenses. Our Lady is obviously hurt. Why is she hurt? She’s hurt not because all these insults against her virginity, her Immaculate Conception, her Divine Motherhood, and her mediation are against her, but because these are gifts of God. She has received these gifts, she did not take them herself. They are gifts of God and it’s her duty to be faithful. It’s like Archbishop Lefebvre said: “This Mass is not mine. I did not make the traditional Faith. I have received it. I have to defend it.” And Our Lady is hurt because by insulting her and her privileges, we are insulting Almighty God who put her there. That’s why we must make reparation. How Can We Make Reparation? What is the best way to pull the thorns out of her Immaculate Heart? Well, you don’t have to think very hard, because she herself has told us. It’s the whole devotion of the First Saturdays. It could not be more simple, it’s all spelled out; we just have to check that we’ve done it each month, and that’s the way she wants to be consoled. Let me explain the wisdom behind these First Saturdays. It was December 10, 1925. In 1917 she said, “I will come back to ask for the Communion of reparation of the First Saturdays.” She came back eight years later in 1925 with the Child Jesus. The Child Jesus said first, “Have compassion on the heart of your most holy Mother. She’s a mother whose heart is covered with the thorns with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment without there being anyone to make an act of reparation to remove them.” Then Our Lady said, “See, my daughter, my heart surrounded with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You at least try to console me, and say that I promise to assist at the hour of their death with all the graces necessary for the salvation of their soul all those who for five months on the first Saturday will 1) Go to confession, 2) receive Holy Communion, 3) recite the Rosary, and 4) keep me company for 15 minutes while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, 5) in a spirit of reparation. This is the great promise of the First Saturdays. And that is part of the message of Fatima. Don’t forget, it’s not just the consecration of Russia which must be done by the Pope. It is also the consecration and the promotion of the First Saturdays. So let’s look at these five points. Firstly, confession. Our Lady wants us to go to confession. Our Lord had been doing miracles for years, He had cured everybody in 35 so many places, but there was still something more Jesus wanted to do. And if you see the way it develops in the Gospel you see the gentleness and delicacy of God’s grace. Soon after a man was lowered from the ceiling Jesus said, “Your sins are forgiven you,” and the Jews were scandalized. And Jesus, who knew what they were thinking, said, “Why are you thinking this in your heart?” So everything Jesus said was spread around by the people. Our Lord’s fame was growing, and you know what people were saying after this? “He can read in people’s hearts, He can forgive sins.” That’s how Our Lord gently let that word out, and finally they started to germinate. One time, it was either in Magdala or along Lake Genesereth, this woman who had a lot on her soul had heard about this Prophet, and she did not feel at peace with herself and she wanted peace. She had heard somewhere about this Prophet that he cures and talks to the people and that He also forgives sins. She had never heard that before. “No prophet before had ever forgiven sins. But this Man does it and He reads hearts, so I won’t have to say anything. He will read my heart. He knows.” And so she managed to find Him. He was in the middle of a banquet. She walked in and fell at His feet. Everyone just stopped what they were doing because there was a street woman in the room. And she just started to bathe His feet in her tears and wipe them with her hair. Just think of the joy of Our Lord. This is the first time someone reads the heart of Our Lord! Yes, the Good Shepherd has come to cure and make miracles, but it is more than that. He wants to cure souls. And the joy of Our Lord, who has found this lost sheep–that was the purpose of the Incarnation and the Redemption. He died on the Cross to wash away our sins, not to cure our diseases. It’s a battle between sin and grace. Our Lady knows that. Our Lady has only one desire. St. Jerome says that all the graces that are in Our Lord are also in Our Lady. In His encyclical Ad Diem Illum [available from Angelus Press. Price: $2.95–Ed.], St. Pius X said says very clearly these words, which are being denied today in the Vatican document: there’s no exception, everything Our Lord has merited in justice–strict justice–Our Lady has also merited out of charity. And so she has one desire, and that is to see grace in our hearts by going to confession. That’s why that’s the first condition of the first Saturdays: make your peace with God. And many of you have probably been to confession on retreat, and you know that you must just let it out just like St. Augustine in Milan when he fell under the tree and said “My God, my God! Why can’t I just have this peace now?” St. Augustine like us was struggling and thought that at that moment he wanted to be pure, but “not right now.” He was struggling and thought, “Why not now?” Our Lady gave him that grace and then St. Augustine became St. Augustine. He got that grace just like St. Mary Magdalen at the feet of Our Lord. It’s the greatest joy we can give Our Lady to get the thorns out of our own heart, the thorns of sin. We’re causing joy to Our Lady because she knows when we do that it’s the greatest joy we can give Our Lord, and Our Lady rejoices when she sees Jesus rejoicing. Secondly, once we have been to confession and our soul is at peace, then we can receive Holy Communion. And that’s what She wants: for us to unite with Our Lord. Just as Our Lord said at the Last Supper, “that I be in them and they be in Me.” Our Lord has this desire to come into us. Holy Communion is not for the tabernacle. The real tabernacle is the human heart. The tabernacle is only the lobby, the waiting lounge. Our Lord is there for us. “Give us this day our daily bread.” And I hope, my dear brethren, that after this pilgrimage all of us make the resolution to make more frequent confessions and more frequent Communions. Thirdly, Our Lady asks for vocal prayer, which is the Rosary, and mental prayer, which is meditation. Our Lady is a very good retreat mistress. She wants us to receive the sacraments. We’re not good Catholics unless we receive the sacraments frequently. Let us not deceive ourselves. Even if you say the Rosary occasionally, that’s not enough. Confession and Communion: that’s what Our Lady wants here at Fatima. And then, by saying the Rosary we’re reviewing her life story and the life story of Our Lord. It’s not just mysteries of the past, but these mysteries are alive when we mediate on them. There’s a special grace attached to them every day in the liturgy when we celebrate the mysteries. And mental prayer has to sink in. We know the story of Bethlehem and the story of the Crucifixion, but what does it mean for you? Do you realize how much you have cost Our Lord? Or how infinitely lovable He is? We need to meditate and think about it. Think heart to heart with love. Finally, all these conditions, confession, communion, the Rosary, meditation: all four with the intention to make reparation to the Immaculate Heart. That is what Our Lady has asked, and the best thing that we can do to console her is to do it. If you have done it once, do it again. Do it for someone else, your family and friends, for those you work with, for all those who don’t do it and to console Our Lady. Don’t just do it one time and say “Okay, I’m fine now, I’ve got my insurance policy.” No, keep doing the First Saturdays and don’t forget that it is to console Our Lady. And, finally, Our Lady is asking for sacrifices and the consecration of Russia to herself. As Bishop Fellay said today, “As much as it is in our power, we consecrate Russia, but let us consecrate each one of us individually to her Immaculate Heart.” As St. Alphonsus says: “God wills it, Our Lady deserves it, and we need it.” Fr. Couture, a Canadian, was ordained at Ecône in 1984. Having served at Post Falls, Idaho, and then in Ireland, he was named Superior of the District of Asia in 1996, at which post he is still serving, headquartered in Singapore. Father’s conference was transcribed and edited by Angelus Press. www.angeluspress.org THE ANGELUS • November 2005 FATIMA PILGRIMAGE of REPARATION 2005 JOHN VENNARI: DRAMA AT FATIMA Shrine Authorities Disrupt Pilgrimage “I think they would have been more intelligent to leave us alone,” said Bishop Richard Williamson. “As it is, they fired up a sense of combat in quite a few combative Catholics.” A unique Pilgrimage of Reparation was organized, primarily by the Society of Saint Pius X, to make public reparation for the May 5, 2004 desecration of the Fatima Shrine. On that day, as documented in Catholic Family News with pictures from a television broadcast of the event, Hindus were permitted by the Shrine Rector to commandeer the sanctuary. A Hindu priest at the Catholic altar in the Little Chapel of the Apparitions chanted a prayer for peace to the false gods of Hinduism. A Hindu congregation chanted Hindu responses. This public defilement called for public atonement. On August 21 and 22, thousands of concerned Catholics from around the world converged on Fatima to make this Act of Reparation. I traveled to Portugal for the event with a pilgrimage organized by Fr. Gruner’s Fatima Center. I file this report from Fatima on the day of the Act of Reparation. From the time that the Hindus desecrated the Sanctuary, Fatima Shrine Rector Luciano Guerra has been hostile to traditional Catholics protesting the outrage. That hostility reared its head during the day of reparation on August 22. On the previous day–Sunday, August 21–a solemn High Mass was celebrated for the pilgrims in a field about a mile from the Fatima Shrine. Bishop THE ANGELUS • November 2005 www.angeluspress.org Bernard Fellay, Superior General of the Society of Saint Pius X, was celebrant. Then on Monday, a low Mass was held at the same outdoor site, followed by a procession to the Shrine. Upon arriving at the Shrine, the hundreds of priests, four bishops, many religious, and thousands of faithful, confronted a barricade that blocked their way to the Little Chapel of the Apparitions, even though the SSPX had made an agreement with Shrine authorities to be at the Little Chapel at that hour. This coincided with another oddity. We arrived at 1:30pm as had been long-planned and announced, and the Shrine had their charwomen vacuuming the sanctuary. One priest who has often been to Fatima said he never saw this before–women vacuuming the sanctuary in the middle of the day. The men from the procession opened up the barricade themselves, and the huge crowd took its place in front of the Little Chapel of the Apparitions. We never entered the Chapel itself. The four bishops of the Society of Saint Pius X knelt in front of the Little Chapel. The ensemble of pilgrims chanted the Litany of the Sacred Heart, and then began to pray the Rosary in Latin. At about the third decade of the Rosary, three nuns from the Fatima Shrine approached the podium in the sanctuary, as if they were going to start a ceremony of their own. We had just finished a decade, so we began to sing Christus Vincit. Immediately after we started our hymn, the nuns from the Shrine began : A 37 to sing over the microphone a different hymn from ours, in an attempt to disrupt our prayers. It was a dramatic standoff. We stood at full height and sang louder. The nuns continued the challenge, singing their own hymns over the microphone. It was as bizarre as it was childish. Tension mounted. We were outraged that the Shrine representatives would hurl such contempt at our group, which was merely praying the Rosary at the Fatima Shrine. This “got the Irish up” of a Redemptorist Brother who stepped over the small outside wall around the Little Chapel and made his way toward the nuns. His plan, he later told me, was to pull the microphone away from these peculiar Sisters treating us with derision. As he approached the nuns, he was seized by Shrine guards. A scuffle ensued. Various pilgrims in the crowd gasped in horror. Bishop Alfonso de Galarreta from the SSPX rose to his feet to establish calm. The guards released the Brother. The Shrine nuns withdrew from the sanctuary and we continued our prayers. Within two minutes, the Shrine authorities retaliated. Sacred music suddenly began to blast from the Shrine’s sound system. It was full volume, so loud that I could barely hear the Rosary recited by the people around me. The entire esplanade vibrated from the Shrine’s state-of-the-art sound system, designed to project sound to tens of thousands of people. Later, a hotel owner who has been in Fatima for 20 years, and whose establishment is a 20-minute walk from the Shrine, said he has never heard Shrine music from his hotel before. Today was the first time. It was Sacred music used as a weapon against traditional Catholics. Clearly, the Shrine authorities blasted the music to drown us out and drive us out. They may have drowned us out, but they did not get rid of us. We continued the Rosary as the music blared. The bishops, priests and people renewed the Act of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The pilgrims sang a final hymn to Our Lady and broke into applause while doing so. Then the entire group solemnly processed from the Little Chapel. The Act of Reparation was concluded. We completed what we set out to do, despite the Shrine authorities’ clumsy attempt at disruption. Afterwards, I interviewed priests and bishops from the Society of Saint Pius X for their reaction. Australia’s Fr. Kevin Robinson said, We’ve just witnessed an incredible scene. This is the power of Tradition over the devil-inspired new religion. I think everybody here is very happy to have experienced the Consecration of the Society. And please God we can overcome these modernists. I asked Fr. Robinson if he sensed that when the Shrine authorities cranked up the music, it strengthened the resolve of the entire group. It bolstered everyone to stand taller, pray longer, and sing louder. “That’s exactly what happened,” he responded. “They provoked us to pray more, to pray for their conversion. This is the place where conversions happen.” Bishop Bernard Fellay, Superior General of the Society of Saint Pius X, said, “We had, during our little Act of Reparation, a very, very nasty reaction from the side of the Sanctuary. They provoked, but there was a happy end.” The happy end he refers to is the fact that the priest and pilgrims did not budge. They completed the Act of Reparation as they had set out to do. Fr. Geraldo Zendejas, Prior of St. Ignatius Retreat House, said, We came here for a public act of reparation, and we received the answer from them (the Shrine). They want to silence us. Everybody’s accepted here, even the Hindus. But today, we were rejected. We were 2,000 people just praying on our knees for the glory of God.... This is true. Under Rector Guerra, Hindus were welcome to pray at the altar. Interfaith Congresses were held at the Fatima Shrine’s conference center. Anglicans have conducted retreats at the Shrine. But Traditional Catholics, who believe everything the Church has always taught and practiced, are not welcome. Fr. Jean Violette, District Superior of Canada, made a similar point: I’m sure if we would have worn turbans, the Rector would have greeted us at the Statue. We all would have held hands, and we would have had a nice ecumenical meeting. Instead, we were received very rudely–a typical Novus Ordo ecumenical gesture. Fr. Anthony Mary from the traditionalist Redemptorists in Great Britain, said, “I heard from Fr. Schmidberger that everything had been organized. They (at the Shrine) knew we were coming.” Conditions, he explained, were agreed to with the Shrine regarding the public prayer in front of the Little Chapel. He continued: We kept the conditions to do the consecration...and Fr. Schmidberger said that he was very surprised that they broke the conditions (the agreement). And once they at the Shrine broke the conditions of keeping the arrangement, then, well, we actually had to break through the barriers to get through. So I think the whole attitude of them was despicable. The least they could have had was the simple, natural charity to let us say our prayers and not try to interrupt it. But it’s wonderful that we managed to do what we had to do, and I’m sure graces will be won for the Fraternity (SSPX), for Tradition, and reparation done as well. JOHN FULLERTON Society of Saint Pius X District of the United States of America REGINA COELI HOUSE Dear Friends and Benefactors, I would like to thank all of you for your prayers and sacrifices made for the intentions of the recent pilgrimage of reparation in Fatima on the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It was a great pleasure to see that several hundred of our U.S. faithful had made the trip to Fatima in order to unite with several thousands from many other countries on this momentous occasion. For those of you who were unable to make the trip, yet joined us in spirit, a brief account of the events might be of interest. The program began on Saturday, August 20th at 5:00 p.m. Conferences were given in four different languages on the purpose of the pilgrimage–to make reparation to the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts of Jesus and Mary and especially for the public desecration of the Fatima Shrine itself on May 5th, 2004. Fr. Couture gave the conference in English to a crowd of nearly 400 pilgrims, who overflowed into the hallways outside the conference room. In the evening a film was shown on the current crises within the Church. On Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. our Superior General, Bishop Bernard Fellay, celebrated a Pontifical High Mass in a field about a mile from the shrine. During the sermon he spoke to the crowd of nearly 2500 about the reasons for this pilgrimage. “This time what calls us here is the wrath of God, His anger and indignation in front of what is happening: offenses against the Glory of God and against the honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary and much more–the eradication of the real message of Fatima; offenses which in whole are in line with the new theology introduced at the time of the Second Vatican Council, which generated the New Mass and Ecumenism. We are here to recall and remember what the Blessed Virgin Mary really said and why she came and that she called for prayer and penance–in the sense of reparation for our sins and for those of others.” In the afternoon many of the faithful attended the Stations of the Cross, long ago erected on the hill where Our Lady appeared on August 19th, near Aljustrel, the town where the three children lived. The group following the Stations in English was quite impressive as nearly 400 made the climb from station to station to the summit. That night a vigil of prayer was held before the Blessed Sacrament from 10:30 to midnight. Then on Monday August 22nd, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was celebrated by Fr. Schmidberger at 11:30 a.m. There followed several short inspirational sermons and then the procession to the Sanctuary of the Apparitions. The group of nearly 200 priests and religious and over 2000 faithful stretched out through the streets of Fatima as it headed toward the Shrine. As we entered the Shrine grounds the excitement soon began. With the clergy leading, one of the security personnel tried to silence our small PA system, indicating that it was forbidden on the Shrine grounds. One young man holding one of the speakers indicated that he could not turn it off and after a few excited words the guard walked away. Meanwhile the group proceeded toward the little Chapel of the Apparitions, where the Shrine Rector had allowed the desecration to take place. A bit of a surprise awaited us there. As the Cross-bearer and Acolytes approached the entrance to the Capelhina they were prevented from entering by a barricade set up by a group of security guards. The guards claimed that we needed written permission to enter, even though our prior in Fatima, Fr. Maret, had already set up an appointment for an hour of prayer with the Shrine Rector. As the long line of pilgrims continued to file into the Shrine grounds it appeared that the N 39 guards soon thought better of this and opened the barricade for us to enter. All then filed in and knelt around the Capelhina to pray. It immediately became evident, however, that the Shrine officials did not intend to allow us to pray in peace. It seems that the time of our visit had also been chosen as a good time for the cleaning of the Sanctuary, which continued with vacuum cleaners roaring, through the first half of our Rosary. After the third decade the cleaning women were replaced by several sisters who, using the Capelhina speaker system, tried to drown out our hymns and prayers with their own. The struggle soon came to a climax when one fired up young brother jumped over the barrier in order to try and take the sisters’ microphone away. Security guards were quick to respond, being almost as quick as the sisters were to depart, and they grabbed the young brother and forced him back over the barrier. The shrine authorities then retaliated by blasting music over the Shrine’s larger speaker system. Despite the attempt to drive us off, we continued with our prayers of reparation and, after finishing our rosary, we made the Act of Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Bishop Fellay then gave his blessing to the pilgrims and as we processed from the Capelhina a hearty round of applause went up from the crowd. Thus was performed a small, yet significant, act of reparation for the glory of God and honor of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. We must all continue to perform such acts of reparation in our daily lives especially by prayer and penance, as Our Lady requested. Through these means we can all console our Lord Jesus Christ and His Blessed Mother Mary and work for the salvation of poor sinners. Ad majorem Dei gloriam. Sincerely yours in the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. John D. Fullerton September 2005 LETTER: FR. JEAN VIOLETTE SOCIETY OF SAINT PIUS X Canada Dear Faithful, No doubt you now all know about the SSPX’s pilgrimage of reparation to Fatima. Bishop Fellay invited traditional Catholics from around the world to Fatima to make reparation for the scandalous and sacrilegious inter-faith prayer meeting with the Buddhists which took place earlier this year. About 3000 were present from all over the world: Europe, Asia, Australia, North and South America. I accompanied a group of 27 Canadians and 65 Americans. The Canadian contingent left Toronto on August 18th and returned on the 30th. We arrived in Portugal on the 19th and our first stop was in Santarem, the site of a Eucharistic miracle in the 13th century. After Mass celebrated by Fr. Somerville, we left for Fatima. I will not go into all the details of our stay, as you can read them in John Vennari’s article in Catholic Family News. Suffice it to say we received a novus ordo welcome. Again Bishop Fellay had to offer the pontifical high Mass in a field on Sunday. On Monday 22nd, after Mass the clergy and faithful processed to the Shrine. After the Shrine authorities had given permission for our coming they tried to stop or at least disrupt our prayers. We were not agitating against Rome, against the Pope or the Shrine’s rector. There were no speeches. We were a 40 group of 3000 ecclesiastics and faithful praying the Rosary! What else do you do in Fatima? But I guess our purpose of offering reparation did not sit well with them. This was good for all to experience. First, Our Lord tells us to rejoice when we are persecuted for His name. Secondly, if any one has any thought about the fight between tradition and modernism being over this would have opened their eyes. Interesting to note that while we were praying the Rosary at Fatima and making the act of reparation an earthquake shook Rome. On Tuesday 23rd, we left for Burgos, Spain, where we visited the beautiful cathedral and stayed overnight. We left for Lourdes where we arrived on the 24th and stayed for two days. On the 26th, we left for Avignon to visit the palace of the Popes when they were in exile in the 1300’s, a sad period in the history of the Church. Saturday we visited a place called Notre Dame de l’Osier or Our Lady of the Willow, with a beautiful basilica in the middle of nowhere! That’s France. It was the site of an apparition of our Lady to a Protestant man who converted. That evening we were in Ars to visit the Curé, St. John Mary Vianney. His incorrupt body is on display in the basilica. On Sunday morning we left for Parayle-Monial where the Sacred Heart appeared to St. Margaret Mary asking for reparation for sacrileges against the Blessed Sacrament. In the afternoon we stopped in Nevers to venerate the incorrupt body of St. Bernadette, who saw Our Lady at Lourdes. That evening we were in Paris. On Monday, we went to Notre Dame and the Sainte Chapelle, Mass at St. Nicolas du Chardonnet, which is the SSPX church in Paris. In the afternoon we visited la Rue du Bac where our Lady appeared to St. Catherine Labouré and gave her the Miraculous Medal. St. Catherine’s body is also incorrupt and can be venerated by the faithful. Afterwards, we went to see St. Vincent de Paul, whose body is also incorrupt. Then the bus drivers took us for a spin around the main sites of Paris. We only had one day in Paris, which is a shame as there is much to see both religious and historical. But we ended up at the foot of the Eiffel Tower where many pictures were taken of course. We returned to Canada on Tuesday the 30th, exhausted but happy. I’m sure everyone’s faith in the Catholic Church and the means of sanctification was confirmed at the site of the apparitions, miracles and incorrupt bodies. As you also know, Bishop Fellay, accompanied by Fr. Schmidberger, was received in audience by Pope Benedict XVI, who was accompanied by Cardinal Darío Castrillón Hoyos, head of the Ecclesia Dei Commission. I’m sure many of you have read on the Internet all the armchair experts and theologians who were predicting the collapse of the SSPX. Bishop Fellay simply presented the Pope with another statement of our positions, notably the two preconditions for [an agreement]: the lifting of the ban on the traditional Mass and acknowledging the right of all priests to offer it without special permission or THE ANGELUS • November 2005 www.angeluspress.org indult, and the retraction of the excommunication of the SSPX bishops. We do not want a universal indult. An indult or special permission is not necessary. An indult means that the Mass was abrogated and that they had the right to take it away from us. The Mass was never abrogated and they have no right to take it away from us. The retraction of the so-called excommunication against the bishops because even according to the 1983 Code of Canon Law, when something is done out of necessity there is no penalty. Either the law applies or it does not. If it applies to them it applies to us also. So our Archbishop Lefebvre, Bishop de Castro Mayer and our four bishops were never excommunicated. They agreed to continue the meetings. But as Fr. Schmidberger said in an interview, the solution to the problem does not appear to be months away, but years away. The theological points which oppose us are not minor details; they are matters of faith, not merely disciplinary. The constant effort to make us accept Vatican II and the new Mass, and the ongoing ecumenical scandals do not bode well. Nor can we accept to be looked upon as returning to the Church we never left. To accept what they call, the “restoration to full communion” would mean to accept we left the Church, that we created a schism, which of course we do not accept. You cannot create a schism by keeping the Faith! We are in full communion with the Church. It would also mean that we were wrong in resisting the novelties of Vatican II many times condemned by the previous Popes. If we were wrong, they were wrong. This is not possible. Our positions are what they taught, nothing else. This is why we can be sure of our positions. If it were only our opinions, then fine. But the Faith is not matter of opinion as Benedict XVI himself said while he was still Cardinal Ratzinger. This is why the discussions we want to have are not negotiations. One cannot negotiate the Faith. So we need to continue being patient. We know the solution will come from Rome, when the Roman authorities return to the fullness of the Catholic Faith. Continue to pray and sacrifice for this intention. When enough rosaries have been said and enough sacrifices made, our Lady will see fit to have the Pope consecrate Russia to her Immaculate Heart and the crisis will end. Be assured of my grateful daily prayers for you and yours. With my blessing, Fr. Jean Violette Fr. Extra chapels are featured in a special section. Why an altar calendar? Because the Catholic Church considers the altar as the whole reason for the existence of the building in which it stands. Not only does she look upon it as the sacrificial stone, upon which Christ, our Priest and Victim, offers Himself daily in His Eucharistic Sacrifice, which is the central act of her liturgy; but she has proclaimed that the altar represents the Lord Himself. He is Altar, Victim, and Priest; and the reverence for the altar symbolizes the reverence due to Christ Himself. She declares this in the Divine Office for the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica: “[T]he altar which, anointed with oil, denotes the representation of Our Lord Jesus Christ, who is our Altar, Victim, and Priest.” The Pontificale Romanum expands this further by including the members in union with the Head of the Mystical Body. In the rite of the subdeaconate, it says: For the Altar of Holy Church is Christ Himself, as John bears witness, who, in his Apocalypse, tells us that he beheld a golden Altar (Apoc. 8:3) standing before the throne, in Whom and through Whom the offerings of the faithful are made acceptable to God the Father. The cloths and corporals of this Altar are the members of Christ, God’s faithful people, with whom, as with costly garments, the Lord is clad, according to the Psalmist–“The Lord reigns, He is clothed with majesty” (Ps. 92:1). Moreover, on the altar’s upper surface are incised five crosses, representing Our Lord’s five wounds.” [Adapted from G. Webb, The Liturgical Altar (1949), pp.18-20]. If it’s “holocaust” or “concentration camp” then you’ve been sucked in by the “St. Max Kolbe, Patron Saint of the Holocaust” crowd. This new book by Fr. Karl Stehlin of the Eastern European District of the Society of Saint Pius X is partly biographical but focuses primarily on St. Maximillian Kolbe’s life-long apostolate of spreading devotion to Our Immaculate Lady following the method of St. Loius de Montfort. Father debunks the typical myths of this so-called “Saint of Ecumenism” and shows his concern with combatting heresy, liberalism, modernism, Freemasonry and the need to convert heretics and Jews. One of the best features of this book is that Fr. Vatican II was merely a decisive moment in that struggle when power within the Church passed from the servants of Revelation to the deluded victims of the Revolution.
